The astronomy behind astrology — ecliptic, celestial sphere, planetary motion

Before jyotisha is a system of meaning, it is a system of measurement. Every symbol you will ever read in a chart — signs, houses, planets — is an angle in the real sky, measured from where you were born.

That's worth sitting with, because it makes astrology's raw material checkable. When a chart says the Moon is in Taurus, you could have looked up that night and confirmed it against the stars.

This lesson builds the sky itself: the road the planets travel, the twelve-lane markings we paint on it, the nine travellers — two of which are not bodies at all — and why some of them seem to drive backwards.

The concepts

The ecliptic — one road through the sky

Treat the sky as a sphere around you and every position becomes an angle on it. The Sun's apparent yearly path around that sphere is the ecliptic. The Moon and planets never wander far from this road. The zodiac is a band of sky laid along it, divided into twelve 30-degree lanes.

12 lanes times 30 degrees = the full 360-degree circle. No gaps, no overlaps.

Signs are angles, not star-pictures

The constellations are ragged star groups of wildly unequal size. The signs that share their names are exact 30-degree segments of angle. Jyotisha computes with the segments — clean mathematics — and keeps the star-pictures only as namesakes and anchors.

The constellation Virgo sprawls over 40 degrees of sky; the sign Virgo is exactly 30.

Geocentric is a viewpoint, not a theory

Charts describe the sky as seen from the time and place of birth. That is not a claim that the Sun orbits the Earth — it is a choice of vantage point, the only one you actually occupied. Every chart is Earth's-eye astronomy, and it is computed with modern, heliocentric-era precision.

A sunset is 'geocentric' too — perfectly real from where you stand.

Nine grahas, seven of them bodies

Graha means 'grasper' — that which seizes. Jyotisha counts nine: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, plus Rahu and Ketu. The outer planets of modern astronomy are not part of the classical Parashari toolkit.

Rahu and Ketu are points, not planets

The Moon's orbit is tilted; it crosses the ecliptic at two points. Those crossing points are Rahu and Ketu — the lunar nodes. They are mathematical points, not bodies, they sit exactly opposite each other always, and they are where eclipses happen. That is why tradition calls them shadow grahas.

Rahu at 10 degrees Taurus guarantees Ketu at 10 degrees Scorpio. No exceptions, ever.

Fast planets tell your story, slow ones tell your era's

The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a quarter days, the Sun in a month, Saturn in about two and a half years. Fast movers differ between two people born days apart — personal detail. Slow movers stamp whole cohorts — everyone your age shares a Saturn sign.

Moon sign: yours. Saturn sign: your school year's.

Retrograde is real in the sky, not in the orbit

No planet ever reverses course. When Earth overtakes a slower planet — or is overtaken by a faster one — that planet appears to slide backward against the stars for a while. Retrograde is an optical effect of relative motion, and charts record it because charts record the seen sky.

Drive past a slower truck and it drifts backward in your window. Its wheels never turned around.

Everything in a kundli is the actual sky — measured as angles on the ecliptic, from the exact time and place you arrived. Symbol by symbol, jyotisha's raw material is astronomy.
