Bhavat bhavam — house-from-house derivation

Watch a working astrologer take a career question. They audit the 10th house, its lord, the karaka — the three witnesses you now command — and then, unaccountably, they glance at the 7th. The marriage house? On a career question? They are not being sloppy. They are running a rule you do not have yet.

The rule is bhavat bhavam — 'from house to house.' Parashara's insight: a house draws support not only from itself but from the house standing in the same relation to it as it stands to the lagna. Wealth is the 2nd; wealth's own wealth is the 2nd from the 2nd — the 3rd, the effort that earns it. Every topic runs one level deeper than its house.

The whole trick is one line of arithmetic — count N houses from house N, counting inclusively — and one table of eleven pairs. By the end of this lesson you will compute any pair on sight, and you will own the three pairs that quietly change how every chart reads.

By the end: Compute the bhavat-bhavam house for any house on sight — the Nth from the Nth, landing at 2N minus 1 — and add it as a co-signifying witness when judging that house's topic.

The Nth from the Nth

Every house has a second self

Bhavat bhavam — 'from house to house' — says the Nth house from the Nth house co-signifies the same matter, one level deeper. Support for a topic comes not just from its own house but from the house that stands to it exactly as it stands to the lagna.

The 2nd is wealth. The 2nd from the 2nd — the 3rd — is wealth's wealth: the earning effort behind the money.

Count inclusively — the answer is 2N minus 1

Count the starting house as one and step N houses; you always land on house 2N−1, subtracting 12 if you overshoot. The full table: 2→3, 3→5, 4→7, 5→9, 6→11, 7→1, 8→3, 9→5, 10→7, 11→9, 12→11. Eleven pairs — memorize the rule, not the list.

The 6th from the 6th: 2×6−1 = 11. Gains and ailments share a wire — the 11th quietly supports the 6th's matters.

Bhavat bhavam only lands on odd houses

2N−1 is always odd, so every result falls on 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, or 1 — never an even house. Even houses receive no Nth-from-Nth support at all. This gives you a free audit: if your count lands on an even house, you miscounted. Recount before you read.

Someone claims the 9th from the 9th is the 6th. Even number — rejected before you even recount. It is the 5th: 17−12.

10th from the 10th — the 7th is secretly a career house

Career's career is 2×10−1 = 19, minus 12: the 7th. That is why the marriage house moonlights on every career question — it holds the marketplace, the clients, the public you transact with. A strong 7th gives a career something to land on; an afflicted one starves it of an audience.

The astrologer from the hook was not checking marriage. They were checking whether the career has a public.

7th from the 7th — your partner's partner is you

Count seven from the 7th: 13, minus 12 — the 1st. The spouse's spouse is you, so the lagna carries half of every marriage question. A marriage read that never audits the 1st house has interviewed only one of the two people in the room.

Judging a client's marriage, you weigh their own 1st house as seriously as their 7th — they are the other half of the answer.

The 5-9 axis feeds itself

The 9th from the 9th is the 5th — fortune's fortune, which lands on purva punya, 'merit carried from past lives.' And the 5th from the 5th is the 9th. This is the only mutual pair in the table: merit and fortune reinforce each other in both directions, which is why the 5-9 axis reads as one circuit.

Strong 5th, strong 9th: each is the other's deeper level. The trikonas do not just cooperate — they compound.

The one idea to keep

Every house casts a shadow

Every house casts a shadow house — the same distance again, at 2N−1. When a topic matters, check where its shadow falls and log it as a co-signifying witness beside the house, lord, and karaka from the three-fold method. A strong 7th strengthens a career case; a strong 1st strengthens a marriage case.

Practice

A client asks about illness and debts — 6th-house matters. Which house co-signifies by bhavat bhavam?

Work it out

Count inclusively: the 6th from the 6th. Or run the shortcut — 2N−1.

Why do working astrologers glance at the 7th house on every serious career question?

Work it out

Career is the 10th. Where does the 10th's own 10th fall?

A study partner announces: 'The 9th from the 9th is the 6th.' Before you even recount, what tells you this is wrong?

Work it out

What parity does 2N−1 force on every result?

You are judging a marriage question with the three-fold method: 7th house, 7th lord, Venus. What does bhavat bhavam add to the case?

Work it out

Where does the 7th's own 7th fall — and what role does a bhavat-bhavam house play at this depth?
