Identifying placements — sign, house, nakshatra of every planet

Watch a working astrologer open a chart. Within seconds they're murmuring it: Saturn, Aries, tenth house, Bharani. No finger-counting, no pause, no flipping back to a table.

That isn't mystique — it's fluency. The same way you read a clock: you don't compute the angle between the hands, you just see 7:40. Sign, house, nakshatra come off the chart in one glance, planet after planet.

You already own every part. Signs and their lords, houses, the nakshatra grid, and last lesson, the lagna that anchors it all. This lesson welds them into one reflex — and drills it until reading a placement feels like telling the time.

By the end: Read any planet's full address off a chart — its sign, its house counted from the lagna, and its nakshatra with pada — fluently, for all nine grahas.

The concepts

Three coordinates, one planet

Every graha (planet) has a three-part address. Its sign: which 30-degree lane of the zodiac it occupies. Its house: how far that lane sits from the lagna. Its nakshatra: which lunar mansion runs beneath. Sign and nakshatra are fixed by the sky; the house is fixed by the birth.

Saturn at 20° Aries with Cancer rising: sign Aries, house 10, nakshatra Bharani.

Sign: where the planet actually is

The sign is astronomy. On the birth date, Saturn simply was in Aries — for everyone on Earth. No lagna, no birthplace, no counting: you read it straight off the chart. Every dignity verdict from module 2 — exaltation, own sign, debilitation — hangs on this coordinate alone.

Two babies born oceans apart on the same day share every planet's sign.

House: count from the lagna, always

House = how many signs the planet sits from the lagna, counting the lagna's own sign as 1 and walking forward. The classic beginner trap: counting from Aries because it is sign number one. Aries is first in the zodiac — not in your chart. The lagna is.

Leo lagna, planet in Scorpio: Leo 1, Virgo 2, Libra 3, Scorpio 4 — the 4th.

Priya's Saturn, step by step

Open Priya's chart — Cancer lagna. Saturn sits in Aries; which house? Count: Cancer 1, Leo 2, Virgo 3, Libra 4, Scorpio 5, Sagittarius 6, Capricorn 7, Aquarius 8, Pisces 9, Aries 10. Saturn is in the 10th. Count from Aries instead and you'd call it the 1st — wrong chart, wrong life.

Same chart: Mars in Capricorn is the 7th — Cancer 1, walk six signs forward.

Nakshatra: the finer mesh beneath

Beneath the twelve signs runs the 27-fold lunar grid from module 2: each nakshatra spans 13°20′, each pada (quarter) 3°20′. A planet at 8° Cancer is in the sign Cancer AND in Pushya nakshatra — two grids, one position. The Moon's own nakshatra, the janma nakshatra, matters most: it seeds the dasha clock coming in module 6.

8° Cancer: sign Cancer, nakshatra Pushya, pada 2.

5° Leo is not 28° Leo

Same sign, same house — different nakshatra, different pada. 5° Leo sits in Magha; 28° Leo in Uttara Phalguni. Precision matters exactly as much as the technique you're feeding: sign-level verdicts like dignity ignore the degree, while combustion, padas, and the dasha clock demand it. Note the degree; spend it when a technique asks.

Sign verdict on both: identical. Nakshatra reading: two different mansions entirely.

The one idea to keep

An address, not a word

A placement is an address, not a word: sign, house, nakshatra — street, city, postcode. Read all three before you interpret anything. And read in the same order every time: lagna first, then Moon and Sun, then the rest, planet by planet. That drill is what every later technique stands on.

Lab

Name each graha's house counting from the lagna — clear all nine, and watch every correct answer peel back the sign to reveal the nakshatra running beneath it.

Priya — Cancer lagna — lagna Cancer. Count houses from there.

Practice

Cancer lagna, Jupiter in Pisces. Which house is Jupiter in?

Work it out

Count forward on the chart panel: Cancer is 1, Leo is 2, and keep walking.

A planet sits at 8° Cancer. Which statement is true?

Work it out

In the lab, every correct house answer reveals exactly this second layer under the sign.

You open an unfamiliar chart. Per the fluency drill, what is the reading order?

Work it out

It begins exactly where lesson 3.1's two-second read began.

Two charts put the Sun at 5° Leo and at 28° Leo, both with Aries lagna. What differs between the two Suns?

Work it out

Use the chart panel's switcher to compare charts — the same sign can hide different nakshatras beneath.
