Lunar yogas — Sunapha, Anapha, Durudhara, Kemadruma, Gajakesari

Last lesson closed with a warning: bring your kendra counting, because the reckoning point is about to move. Today it does. Every yoga in this family is counted not from the lagna but from the Moon herself — chandra lagna, the mind's own ascendant (n27) — because these yogas ask a different question than thrones and treasuries. They ask whether the mind has company.

The answers have famous names. Sunapha, anapha, durudhara — the supported Moon in three degrees. Gaja-kesari — the elephant-lion, the single most requested yoga in any consultation. And kemadruma — the lonely Moon, the most over-quoted fear in astrology: type it into any forum and watch strangers get told their chart promises poverty before anyone has counted a single house.

That panic is almost always premature, and by the end of this lesson you will be able to prove it — the classics wrote cancellations into kemadruma, and most formations die on that checklist. One of our four example charts forms kemadruma by the book and cancels it by the book, and you are going to run the whole sequence yourself: check, then calm.

By the end: Run the lunar-yoga scan on any chart — recount the houses from the Moon, test the 2nd and 12th with the qualifying-planet filter to name sunapha, anapha, durudhara, or kemadruma, run every kemadruma through its cancellation list before pronouncing loneliness, count gaja-kesari's kendra from the Moon and grade Jupiter before promising lions, and check the 6th, 7th, and 8th for adhi yoga's ministers.

The Moon's company: who stands beside her

Count from the Moon

New family, new center. Every yoga today is reckoned from the MOON — chandra lagna, the mind's own ascendant (n27) — not from the rising sign. And the support tests admit only the five tara grahas: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. The Sun and the nodes do not qualify, however close they stand.

Moon in Taurus: her 2nd is Gemini, her 12th is Aries — wherever the lagna happens to sit.

Support ahead, support behind

SUNAPHA: any qualifying planet in the 2nd from the Moon — the mind has somewhere to reach forward; self-earned prosperity, sharp practical intelligence. ANAPHA: a qualifying planet in the 12th from the Moon — the mind is backed from behind; grace of presence, health, a quiet renunciant shade.

Moon in Leo with Mercury in Virgo: sunapha. Moon in Leo with Venus in Cancer: anapha.

Escorted on both sides

Qualifying planets in BOTH the 2nd and 12th from the Moon: durudhara, the fully supported Moon — classically wealth, vehicles, comforts; the strongest of the three support forms. The FLAVOR follows the escorts: benefic company delivers gently, malefic company delivers through harder means. n13's natures color everything the yoga pays.

Jupiter one side, Venus the other: a gracious durudhara. Saturn and Mars flanking: the comforts come, but they are fought for.

The lonely Moon

No qualifying planet in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon: kemadruma, the unsupported mind. Classical readings threaten poverty and restlessness, and no yoga is quoted more recklessly — it is the internet's favorite curse. Hold the verdict: the classics wrote cancellations into this yoga, and most formations trigger at least one.

A bare Moon in the 2nd and 12th is the opening question, never the answer.

Check, then calm

Kemadruma cancels when: any planet stands in a KENDRA from the Moon; the Moon herself stands in a kendra from the lagna; Jupiter conjuncts or aspects the Moon; or the Moon is strong — full, in her own Cancer, or exalted in Taurus. Run all four checks before you pronounce loneliness.

This is n27's promise paid in full: the mind's support structure gets a complete audit, not a two-house glance.

The lion and the ministers

GAJA-KESARI ('elephant-lion'): Jupiter in a kendra FROM THE MOON — the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th from her seat. Fame, virtue, enduring respect — graded by Jupiter's dignity and the Moon's strength; a debilitated Jupiter roars quietly. ADHI YOGA: Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus filling the 6th, 7th, and 8th from the Moon — ministers around the queen; strength rises with seats filled.

The most famous lunar yoga and the most inflated: apply n55's grading before promising lions.

The meta rule

The mind runs on company

The Moon is the mind, and the mind runs on company. Every yoga in this family asks one question: who stands beside her? Check the 2nd, check the 12th, check who guards her angles — and never pronounce loneliness before counting the cancellations. Most kemadrumas die on the checklist; the panic almost never survives the count.

Formation opens the file. The cancellation list — not the forum thread — closes it.

Practice

Open Arjun's chart in the panel. His Moon stands in Taurus. Check her 2nd (Gemini) and her 12th (Aries): both empty. A forum thread would already be typing 'kemadruma — poverty, restlessness.' Run the complete sequence. What is the verdict?

Work it out

Formation first: any qualifying planet in Gemini or Aries? Then the cancellation sweep: walk all four kendras from the Taurus Moon, and check the Moon's own condition.

A chart shows the Moon in Gemini, the Sun in Cancer, and Mercury in Taurus, with nothing else adjacent to the Moon. Which lunar yoga has formed?

Work it out

Count both sides from Gemini — then apply the qualifying-planet filter before you name anything.

Chart one: Moon in Virgo, Jupiter in Libra, Venus in Leo. Chart two: Moon in Virgo, Saturn in Libra, Mars in Leo. Same yoga in both?

Work it out

Libra is which house from a Virgo Moon? Leo is which? Then remember what n13's natures do to a formed yoga's delivery.

A student sees Jupiter exalted in Cancer and the Moon in Pisces and announces gaja-kesari: 'Jupiter and Moon, both strong, both in water signs.' Check the count.

Work it out

Count from the Moon: Pisces to Cancer is how many signs? Which houses from the Moon does gaja-kesari actually accept?

The gate

Five questions with the lesson closed — recount houses from the Moon, apply the qualifying-planet filter before naming anything, run every kemadruma through its cancellations, and grade Jupiter before promising lions.
