Nakshatra classifications — gana, yoni, tattva

Somewhere right now, a family is refusing a marriage because the bride's birth star is 'rakshasa gana' — demon class. It sounds terrifying. It is also a complete misreading of what these labels are for.

The 27 nakshatras carry a set of old classifications — gana, yoni, tattva, nadi — that were never built to describe individuals. They were built for one specific job: comparing two charts, mostly for marriage matching and muhurta.

By the end of this lesson you'll know all the dials, what each one actually scores, and exactly why 'rakshasa gana' on a birth chart means fierce energy — not a fierce person.

By the end: Name the gana and yoni class of a given nakshatra, state what each dial scores in kundli matching, and correct the 'rakshasa gana means bad person' misreading in one sentence.

The concepts

Classifications are for comparing, not describing

The nakshatra tables you're about to meet compress 27 stars into a handful of axes. Why? Because kundli milan — chart matching — needs two charts scored against each other quickly. Every classification here is a dial in that scoring machine, not a verdict about anyone.

Nobody reads 'yoni: rat' as a personality report. The gana labels deserve the same treatment.

Three temperaments: deva, manushya, rakshasa

Every nakshatra belongs to one of three ganas. Deva (divine): gentle, harmonious energy. Manushya (human): mixed, worldly. Rakshasa (fierce): intense, disruptive energy. Nine stars in each class — the sky is split evenly, not into good and bad.

Ashwini and Revati are deva; Rohini and Bharani are manushya; Krittika and Mula are rakshasa.

The dial: same class scores well, deva–rakshasa scores zero

In matching, same or compatible ganas score full points on this dial; a deva–rakshasa pairing scores zero on it. Zero on one dial — not a rejection. And rakshasa gana marks fierce energy in the birth star: often formidable, protective, unstoppable. It does not mark bad people.

A 'rakshasa gana bride' has a fierce-energy birth star. That is the entire claim.

Fourteen animals modelling instinct

Each nakshatra is assigned one of 14 animal pairs — horse, elephant, sheep, serpent, dog, cat, rat, cow, buffalo, tiger, deer, monkey, mongoose, lion — each in a male or female form. Yoni means womb; the dial models instinctive and physical compatibility between two people.

Ashwini is the male horse; Bharani is the male elephant.

Same animal best, enemy animals worst

The yoni dial runs a spectrum: same animal scores highest, friendly animals score well, enemy pairs score zero. The enmities are the ones you'd guess — cat and rat, dog and deer, serpent and mongoose. Instinct either runs together or it doesn't; the table just encodes which.

Cat-yoni with rat-yoni: zero on this dial. Predator and prey.

Two more dials — one small, one heavy

Nakshatras also carry tattva (element) attributions in some traditions — a minor grouping dial alongside gana and yoni. And each belongs to one of three nadis — adi, madhya, antya — the single heaviest dial in the 36-point guna milan system. The full scoring machine is a later module; for now, know the dials exist.

Nadi alone is worth 8 of 36 points — more than gana and yoni combined.

The one idea to keep

Dials, not verdicts

Classifications are compatibility dials — built to compare two charts, not to judge one. Read alone, a gana or yoni label tells you almost nothing about a person. Read against another chart, inside the scoring system it was built for, it does its one job.

Practice

A matching report flags the bride's nakshatra as rakshasa gana. What does that actually tell you about her?

Work it out

What are these classifications built to do — describe one chart, or compare two?

One partner's nakshatra is deva gana, the other's is rakshasa. What happens on the gana dial?

Work it out

The dial runs from same-class (best) to the one pairing that scores nothing.

The yoni classification assigns each nakshatra an animal like cat, rat, or mongoose. What is this dial modelling?

Work it out

Yoni literally means womb. Which layer of a relationship is that pointing at?

Of the nakshatra classification dials used in the 36-point guna milan, which single dial carries the most weight?

Work it out

One dial is worth more than gana and yoni combined — and this lesson only teased it.
