The planetary cabinet and natural benefic/malefic division

You now know the nine grahas as individuals — their significations, dignities, friendships. This lesson organizes them into a government: a royal court with a king, a queen, ministers, a commander, and a servant — plus two outsiders who hold no seat at all.

Then comes the division every classical text makes on page one: some grahas are gentle by nature and some are harsh. Get this split into your bones now, because two of the nine refuse to sit still — the Moon changes sides with her phase, Mercury with his company.

By the end, you'll sort all nine instantly, explain the two shape-shifters, and know why 'malefic' is a job description, not a curse.

By the end: Sort all nine grahas into natural benefics and malefics from memory, apply the phase rule for the Moon and the company rule for Mercury, and name each graha's role in the planetary cabinet.

The concepts

Seven grahas, one government

Parashara's cabinet: the Sun is king, the Moon is queen, Mercury the prince, Jupiter and Venus the two ministers, Mars the commander of armies, Saturn the servant. Rahu and Ketu hold no seat — they sit outside the court, shadow figures with no throne.

One image to keep: a palace with seven offices and two strangers at the gate.

Saumya — the natural benefics

Saumya (gentle) grahas give ease by default: Jupiter, Venus, the waxing Moon, and Mercury when alone or with benefics. Where they sit and aspect, things grow, protect, and smooth out. The two ministers are the only unconditional members — the queen and prince come with fine print.

Jupiter and Venus: benefic always. Moon and Mercury: benefic on conditions.

Krura — the natural malefics

Krura (cruel) grahas give friction by default: the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, the waning Moon, and Mercury in malefic company. The Sun is the mildest — he separates and burns rather than destroys, a king's severity, not a demon's. Rahu and Ketu are counted with Saturn and Mars in harshness.

Sun in a house: scorches and isolates. Saturn there: delays and disciplines.

The Moon changes with her fullness

The queen's nature is her phase. Waxing — shukla paksha, the bright fortnight, gaining light and moving away from the Sun — she is benefic. Waning — krishna paksha, the dark fortnight, losing light — she turns malefic. Her distance from the Sun is the whole test.

Born two days after full Moon? Waning — count her krura for now.

Mercury changes with his friends

The prince has no fixed character — he absorbs the room. Alone in a sign, or with benefics, Mercury is benefic. Conjunct a malefic, he turns malefic. Check who shares his sign before you sort him. This is why simplified tools often just file Moon and Mercury as benefic at beginner depth.

Mercury alone in Virgo: benefic. Mercury with Saturn in Capricorn: malefic.

Malefic is not a synonym for bad

Benefics give ease, growth, protection where they act. Malefics give friction, separation, discipline — and friction is often productive. Saturn builds careers through pressure; Mars cuts what must be cut. A surgeon's knife is krura. The words describe how a graha works, not whether your life goes well.

Many great charts run on strong malefics. The harshness is the engine.

The one idea to keep

Natural nature is reputation

This whole classification describes the sitter — the graha's default character, before any chart exists. Learn it perfectly, because Module 4 exists to overturn it: the lagna reassigns loyalties, and for Libra rising, Saturn the servant becomes the best planet in the chart. Reputation is where the story starts, not where it ends.

Practice

A chart shows the Moon four days before new Moon. As a natural benefic or malefic, how does she count?

Work it out

Which fortnight is she in — gaining light or losing it?

Mercury sits alone in Gemini; no other graha shares the sign. What is his natural nature in this chart?

Work it out

The prince absorbs the room. Who is in the room?

The Sun is classified krura, in the same list as Saturn and Mars. What does his malefic nature actually do?

Work it out

Think of what sunlight does at noon in summer — and what a king's presence does to a room.

A friend sees Saturn prominent in their chart and panics: 'a malefic — so bad things will happen.' The accurate correction is:

Work it out

Is 'malefic' a verdict on outcomes, or a description of method?
