Four charts sit open on the desk — Priya, Arjun, Meera, Dev — and a nervous student asks the question everyone asks: 'Which of them is in Sade Sati right now?' Saturn is in Pisces in 2026. You count it from each Moon: Priya's 9th, Arjun's 11th, Meera's 5th, Dev's 7th. Not one of them is in the 12th, 1st, or 2nd from the Moon. The honest answer is: none. And knowing HOW you just checked is worth more than any folklore.
No transit is feared like Sade Sati, and none is more misunderstood. Saturn is the builder and the teacher (n2). Its long passage over the Moon brings pressure, pruning, and the end of what was unsustainable — but for many people it is the period they did their most enduring work and laid foundations that held for decades. Whether it breaks a person or makes them depends on factors you already know how to read.
This lesson maps the Saturn passages honestly — the three phases, the Kantaka and Ashtama windows, the ingress murti that colours the whole transit — and teaches what actually sets their severity, so you can counsel a client through one without ever frightening them.

Sade Sati ('the seven and a half') is Saturn transiting the 12th, the 1st (over the Moon), and the 2nd from the natal Moon — the sign before, the Moon's sign, and the sign after. At ~2.5 years per sign, the three add to about 7.5 years, and it recurs roughly every 29-30 years. To check for it, find Saturn's house from the Moon: only 12, 1, or 2 qualifies.

The 12th-from-Moon phase (rising) prunes — expenses, endings, release of what is finished. The 1st-from-Moon phase (peak, over the Moon) is the hardest — pressure on mind, body, and self. The 2nd-from-Moon phase (setting) turns to finances and family, and toward rebuilding on the cleared ground.
Many report the middle 2.5 years — Saturn over the Moon — as the most demanding stretch.
Two separate 2.5-year half-passages: Saturn in the 4th from the Moon is the Kantaka (also Ardhashtama or 'small panoti'), pressing on home and peace; Saturn in the 8th is Ashtama Shani, pressing on health and transformation. 'Dhaiya' names the 2.5-year LENGTH of a half-passage; Kantaka (4th) and Ashtama (8th) name the two specific windows. Same balanced reading as Sade Sati.

The ingress murti grades a Saturn passage by the house the TRANSITING Moon occupies from the natal Moon at the moment Saturn enters the new sign: 1/6/11 golden (most benign), 2/5/9 silver, 3/7/10 copper, 4/8/12 iron (hardest). It is one more severity dial, not the whole verdict.
Saturn ingressing while the transit Moon sits in the 11th from the natal Moon: a golden murti — the gentlest colour.
The decisive factors: Saturn's FUNCTIONAL nature for the lagna (yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra — Sade Sati can even build), Saturn's strength and dignity (module 5), vedha relief (n81), the concurrent dasha, and crucially the Moon's own strength. A strong Moon carries pressure; a weak or debilitated Moon makes even a lesser Saturn transit land harder.
Meera's Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, and Saturn transits her 5th (an unfavorable house, though not Sade Sati) — a weak Moon amplifies the pinch.
Read honestly, a Saturn passage brings responsibility, discipline, restructuring, and the end of the unsustainable — losses of the superficial to build the durable. The astrologer's duty (n1): name it as a demanding, maturing season, identify the relief factors present, and counsel patience and realistic effort. Never pronounce doom; a client frightened out of agency has been failed.
Advise steady effort and lowered risk through a Sade Sati, not fear.
