The last lesson handed you twelve signs. Learned one by one, they are a deck of twelve personality profiles — and profiles memorized are profiles forgotten.
Parashara never asks you to memorize twelve of anything. He sorts the signs along three small grids — what each sign wants, how it moves, and whether it runs assertive or gentle. Four elements, three modalities, one alternating switch. That is the entire inventory.
By the end of this lesson you'll pin any sign to its exact coordinate in seconds — and you'll have met, ahead of schedule, the triangle geometry that later powers the luckiest houses in the chart.
By the end: Assign any of the 12 signs its element, modality, and odd/even gender from memory, and name the one sign that matches any element–modality pair.
Every sign carries one of four tattvas (elements). Fire, Agni: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius — will and action. Earth, Prithvi: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn — matter and result. Air, Vayu: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius — ideas and exchange. Water, Jala: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — feeling and depth. Element names what a sign wants.
Aries and Leo can argue about method, never about whether to act — both burn.
Count from any sign to its element-mates: they sit 5th and 9th from each other — a perfect triangle on the wheel. Hold onto this trine spacing. When houses arrive, the 1st, 5th and 9th form the dharma trines, and this same-element geometry is exactly why they cooperate.
From Aries: Leo is the 5th sign along, Sagittarius the 9th. Fire's triangle.
Modality is a sign's gear. Chara (movable) signs initiate: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. Sthira (fixed) signs sustain: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. Dvisvabhava (dual-natured) signs adapt: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. Start, hold, flex — every sign runs exactly one of the three.
Each season opens in a movable sign, deepens in a fixed one, dissolves in a dual one.
Same-modality signs sit 4 apart — 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th from each other, the kendra (angle) spacing. The four movable signs make a square on the wheel; so do the fixed four and the dual four. Trines share an agenda; squares share a method and contest everything else.
From Aries: Cancer is 4th, Libra 7th, Capricorn 10th — all movable.
Number the signs 1 to 12. Odd signs — Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius — are male and krura (cruel, assertive). Even signs — Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces — are female and saumya (gentle, receptive). The alternation is perfect: odd, even, odd, even, all the way around.
Libra, sign 7, is krura — Venus's charm doesn't change its odd number.
Cross the two big grids and something clicks: four elements times three modalities is exactly twelve. Each combination names one sign, and each sign owns one combination. Movable fire? Only Aries. Fixed water? Only Scorpio. Given the pair you can name the sign; given the sign, the pair.
Dual earth — pause and derive it. Virgo, and nothing else.

Element says what a sign wants; modality says how it moves; odd/even sets its temperature. Together they pin the sign exactly — no memorized personality required. Every sign portrait you will ever read is generated from these grids.
