01What is being chosen
A muhurta is an electional chart: the wedding, housewarming, or incorporation gets a kundli of its own, and that chart describes how the venture unfolds. Different acts favour different tithis and nakshatras — what suits a marriage does not suit a griha pravesh. The astrologer's job is to choose the birth moment of the event deliberately.
02How a muhurta is actually selected
1Fix the window
Practical constraints come first — the venue, the leave, the family's dates. Election works inside real life, not instead of it.
2Clean the panchang
Match tithi, nakshatra, and yoga to the act. Marriage, griha pravesh, and a business launch each favour different stars.
3Remove the blocked slots
Strike out Rahu Kaal, eclipse days, and inauspicious yogas. This is subtraction, not superstition — you are clearing the field.
4Check the Moon
Tarabala and chandrabala — the Moon's strength counted from your birth star. This is the step where the muhurta becomes personal.
5Set the lagna
Give the moment a strong rising sign with benefics in kendras. The event's own kundli is the final word.
03What different acts weigh
⚭︎Marriage
Favours gentle, fixed nakshatras — Rohini, Hasta, Anuradha, Revati among them — with both charts' Moon strength checked. The most demanding election of all.
⌂︎Griha pravesh
Prefers fixed signs and fixed stars — you want the household to stay put. Uttarayana months are traditionally favoured.
₹︎Business launch
Wants a strong lagna and Mercury in good shape — trade is his portfolio. Pushya is prized here, yet barred for marriage: the same star, different acts.
→︎Travel
The lightest election — choghadiya and tarabala usually suffice. Tradition also weighs direction (disha shula) by weekday.
04Abhijit, and why lists disagree
Abhijit muhurta — roughly 48 minutes around local midday — is the day's general-purpose good window, honoured on most days, though many traditions drop it on Wednesdays. It is a fallback, not a substitute for a proper election. And no printed list, however clean, knows your chart — the same date is not equally good for everyone.
A muhurta times a good plan. It cannot replace one.
Reading a muhurta list honestlyThree checks before you book
✓Generic lists ignore your chart. Tarabala is counted from your own birth star — a 'good date' for everyone is good for no one in particular.
✓The act's lagna matters. A clean day with a weak rising moment is half a muhurta — the hour is as important as the date.
✓Don't panic-book around fear. A slightly later, cleaner window beats a rushed 'auspicious' one every time.
