The 12 rashis (Vedic moon signs), explained

A rashi is a sign of the Vedic zodiac — and when someone asks your rashi, they mean your moon sign, the sign the Moon occupied when you were born. The Moon rules the mind in Jyotish, so your rashi describes your emotional nature, and it is the sign your daily rashifal is written for.

01Rashi vs Sun sign

Your Western star sign is a Sun sign in the tropical zodiac; your Vedic rashi is a Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac. That is two differences stacked on top of each other — a different point, measured against a differently anchored zodiac. So your rashi is frequently not the sign you grew up calling yourself, and that is expected, not an error.

In Jyotish the Moon is the mind — your rashi is the weather of your inner life.

Frequently asked

What is a rashi?+
A rashi is a Vedic zodiac sign. In everyday use 'your rashi' means your moon sign — the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, which Jyotish treats as the seat of the mind and the basis of your daily rashifal.
Why is my Vedic rashi different from my Western sign?+
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars, and reads the Moon; Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons, and reads the Sun. Either difference alone can shift the result — together they usually do.
How do I find my rashi?+
Cast your kundli from your date, time and place of birth — the Moon's sign in that chart is your rashi. AskVeda computes it free, along with your nakshatra and lagna.
Is my rashi the same as my lagna?+
Usually not. The lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth; the rashi is the Moon's sign. They coincide only when the Moon happened to sit in the rising sign — and both matter, for different things.
