02The one steady light

Every other graha wanders — retrograde, combust, waxing, waning. The Sun never retrogrades: it is the chart's fixed reference, the atma around which the personality organises itself. Its house shows where you are asked to be visible; its sign shows how you carry authority.

03Condition decides

In Aries the Sun commands without apology; in Leo it rules from its own throne. In Libra it is debilitated — not destroyed — and learns that real authority is granted by others, which is why so many judges and diplomats carry Libra Suns. 05Combustion — the Sun's one hazard

Planets travelling too close to the Sun become combust (asta): their significations lose independent expression, outshone by the solar glare. Mercury and Venus are the usual cases, since they never travel far from the Sun. Before judging any planet weak, check whether it is merely combust — and by how many degrees.

Is a Libra Sun really bad?+
Debilitation is a curriculum, not a verdict. In Libra the ego learns to lead through fairness and others' consent — many fine diplomats, judges, and negotiators carry Libra Suns. Check for neecha bhanga (cancellation of debility) and the Sun's house before concluding anything.
My Western sign says Leo but my kundli says Cancer — which is right?+
Both, within their own systems. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac, which currently sits about 24° behind — so your Vedic Sun sign is often one sign earlier. In Vedic practice your rashi (Moon sign) carries more weight than your Sun sign anyway.
What is combustion?+
A planet sitting within a few degrees of the Sun is called combust (asta) — its light is swallowed, and the things it signifies struggle for independent expression. The effect scales with closeness, and the exact orb differs by planet. A combust planet is compromised, not destroyed; a strong sign or house placement recovers much of it.
What does a strong Sun look like in a person?+
Steady self-respect without noise: they hold positions of trust, keep their word, and neither shrink nor inflate in a room. Physically it shows as vitality and upright posture. In the chart, look for the Sun in Aries, Leo, or a friendly sign, in a kendra or trikona, well-aspected and not eclipsed by Rahu or Ketu.
