01Overview
02The most public angle in the chart
The tenth house is the top of the chart and the department other people can see without being told: profession, standing, the action a life is recognised for. It is a kendra, so it is structurally strong, and it is also upachaya, so its results are expected to accumulate rather than arrive complete. Both facts favour a graha placed here, and they favour a slow reading of it.
03What this seat is credited with
04What digbala actually measures
Each graha is assigned a house where it gives its best account of itself, and Surya's is the tenth, which it shares with Mars. It is one component of shadbala, the six-fold strength calculation, and it measures placement by direction rather than by sign, so it neither creates dignity nor cancels its absence. A Capricorn lagna produces the awkward and instructive case of a Sun with full directional strength and debilitation in Libra at the same time, and both readings are true simultaneously.
05Strength has more than one source
| Digbala | Sign dignity | |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Placement by direction — this house, for this graha | The relationship between graha and sign |
| Where the Sun gets it | The 10th house, in any sign | Aries exalted, Leo own, Libra debilitated |
| Can they conflict | Yes — a Capricorn lagna gives both at once | Yes, and neither cancels the other |
| What it does not decide | Whether the house lord is capable | Whether the placement is ever activated |
| How to use it | As one input in a strength calculation | As the first thing checked, and not the last |
06The father, and which house he belongs to
Standard Parashari practice assigns the father to the ninth house, and a substantial strand of the tradition reads him from the tenth instead, with Surya serving as the karaka in both accounts. The tenth-house case rests on the pairing of the fourth house with the mother and the tenth with the father as its opposite, and on Jaimini-derived usage where the parental houses are counted differently; the ninth-house case rests on Parashara's own listing and on the ninth being the house of transmitted authority. Practitioners routinely check both and say so, which is the honest way to handle a question the sources never closed.
