01Overview
02What the twelfth house actually handles
Vyaya means expenditure, and the twelfth house covers everything a life spends rather than everything it forfeits: money going out, energy going into things that do not report back, time spent far from home, sleep, retreat, and the hours nobody else has access to. Foreign places, hospitals and institutions sit here because each is somewhere a person goes out of ordinary circulation. Reading the house as loss rather than as outlay is a translation choice, and it is the source of most of the fear attached to this seat.
03How this placement is described
04Combustion is proximity, and nothing more
The Sun's most consequential mechanic is that any graha too close to it in longitude is astangata, burnt, and the twelfth house is where this gets misread as the house doing the damage. Burning is decided by the number of degrees between two grahas and by nothing else, so a companion is equally combust in the eleventh, the fifth or here, and the sources disagree on the orbs anyway. It is a measurement of distance rather than a judgement, and knowing that removes most of the dread this house attracts.
05Loss and expenditure are not the same word
| Read as expenditure | Read as loss | |
|---|---|---|
| What the house is doing | Directing outflow — money, energy, time | Removing things without consent |
| Foreign residence | A life lived away from the birth ground | Exile |
| Retreat | Hours that belong to no one else | Isolation |
| The Sun here | Authority exercised out of view | Standing that never arrives |
| What decides which one | Dignity, the 12th lord, and the dispositor | The reader's assumptions, mostly |
06Weakened vitality, or vitality relocated
One school reads Surya in the sixth, eighth or twelfth as a straightforward reduction of the Sun's own significations, since a dusthana is held to consume what is placed in it. Another argues that these houses redirect rather than diminish, and that a twelfth-house Sun expresses vitality and authority in settings the chart's owner does not perform in public, which is why the placement recurs among people who run things from behind the scenes. The two readings are not reconcilable, they are both defended from classical material, and the second is far less often offered to anyone paying for a reading.
