02What the twelfth house actually spends
Vyaya means expenditure, and the house covers what a life pays out rather than what it forfeits: money going somewhere, hours given to work that never reports back, sleep, seclusion, distant places, and things deliberately put down. Only one item on that list is a loss in any ordinary sense, and translating the whole house as loss is where most of its reputation comes from. Budha standing there is the faculty of sorting placed in the part of a chart nobody else sees.

Budha brings nothing fixed into a house: the classical rule is that it takes the nature of whatever it is joined to and stays neutral standing alone, which makes the conjunction the deciding factor on every Mercury page and on this one above all. In the department of outflow that produces an unusual result — with nothing attached there is nothing characteristic for the twelfth house to spend, so the placement describes a manner of spending rather than a quantity gone. Whoever is standing beside Mercury supplies the material, and the house supplies only the direction of travel.

The oldest live methodological split in the tradition is how house boundaries are drawn: whole-sign practice assigns an entire sign to one bhava, while bhava chalit computes the cusps from the ascendant's exact degree and routinely shifts a graha one house forward or back. The twelfth is where that matters most, because a Mercury sitting a few degrees inside the twelfth sign frequently lands in the first bhava under chalit — moving it out of the house of outflow and into the one house where Budha holds directional strength. Two competent readers, one working whole-sign and the other chalit, can therefore disagree about whether this page describes your chart at all.
