Vimshottari Dasha — the 120-year planetary clock, explained

Vimshottari dasha is Vedic astrology's master timing system: a fixed 120-year cycle that divides a life into nine planetary chapters. Which chapter you were born into depends on the Moon's nakshatra at your birth — and each chapter delivers exactly what its planet holds in your chart, not what its reputation says.

01What it is

Vimshottari means one hundred and twenty — the full span of the cycle Parashara made the backbone of Vedic timing. Nine planets take turns as mahadasha lord, each ruling a fixed number of years in a fixed order. Your opening chapter — and how much of it was left to run — is set by how far the Moon had travelled through its nakshatra when you were born.

ONE LIFE · NINE CHAPTERS · 120 YEARS Ketu mahadasha — 7 years (age 0–7) KE 7y Venus mahadasha — 20 years (age 7–27) Venus 20y Sun mahadasha — 6 years (age 27–33) SU 6y Moon mahadasha — 10 years (age 33–43) MO 10y Mars mahadasha — 7 years (age 43–50) MA 7y Rahu mahadasha — 18 years (age 50–68) Rahu 18y Jupiter mahadasha — 16 years (age 68–84) Jupiter 16y Saturn mahadasha — 19 years (age 84–103) Saturn 19y Mercury mahadasha — 17 years (age 103–120) Mercury 17y 0 20 40 60 80 100 120
The 120-year lifeline: nine chapters in fixed sequence, each as wide as its years. Your janma nakshatra decides where you step onto it.

02The nine chapters — first arc

YearsThe chapter's flavour
Ketu7Endings, detachment, sharp insight — the quiet, ascetic chapter.
Venus20The longest chapter: relationships, comfort, wealth, art — and their tests.
Sun6Short and bright: authority, visibility, father, the question of who you are.
Moon10The emotional decade — mind, mother, home, and the public.
Mars7Drive and friction: courage, property, siblings, battles worth picking.

03The nine chapters — second arc

YearsThe chapter's flavour
Rahu18Ambition and appetite — foreign lands, sudden rises, unfamiliar terrain.
Jupiter16Growth, teachers, children, dharma — expansion where the chart permits it.
Saturn19The long audit: slow, structural, and the most durable gains of a life.
Mercury17Commerce, learning, speech, networks — the busy, articulate chapter.

04Chapters within chapters

Each mahadasha subdivides into nine antardashas in the same fixed sequence, beginning with the mahadasha lord's own. Antardashas subdivide again into pratyantardashas. At any moment you are living at least three nested clocks — a chapter, a scene inside it, and a line inside the scene.

The dasha turns the page; the chart wrote the book.

05How to read yours

A dasha lord delivers the agenda it holds in your birth chart — its house, dignity, and the aspects on it — not its textbook reputation. Saturn debilitated in the 8th and Saturn exalted in the 10th run two very different 19-year chapters. Judge the planet's condition, never its name.

Frequently asked

How do I know my current dasha?+
Any Vedic chart calculation shows it — our free kundli lists your running mahadasha and antardasha with exact dates. By hand: take your Moon's nakshatra, its lord is your first dasha, prorate the balance by how far the Moon had moved through the nakshatra, then walk the fixed sequence forward to today.
Why do two people in the same dasha get different results?+
Because the dasha lord sits differently in each chart. Venus in the 10th in own sign and Venus combust in the 6th both grant a 20-year Venus dasha — but they hold entirely different agendas. The dasha is the same clock; the chart is a different contract.
What is an antardasha?+
The sub-period inside a mahadasha. Saturn's 19 years, for instance, are divided among all nine planets in sequence, starting with Saturn's own. Events are usually timed by the pair — mahadasha lord sets the theme, antardasha lord fires the specific result.
Is Saturn dasha always hard?+
No. A strong Saturn — own sign, exalted, or yogakaraka for your lagna — can make those 19 years the most productive of a life. A weak or afflicted Saturn asks for more patience and slower returns. Condition decides; reputation doesn't.
