01Overview
02The third house, plainly stated
The third house covers the things a person does with their own effort — courage, initiative, the hands, writing, short journeys, and the siblings who grew up beside you. It is the house of applied capability rather than of status or reward. A graha of technique with no interest in reward is therefore unusually at home in it.
03What the node does in the house of effort
04The upachaya rule, and the axis it belongs to
The third is one of the four upachaya houses, where the tradition holds that a difficult graha improves with time rather than degrading, which is why this is among the more workable seats for a node. Rahu stands opposite in the ninth, so the axis describes a life whose technique is already in place and whose unfinished appetite is for meaning, doctrine and distance. That is a direction of travel, and it is a far more useful thing to read than a verdict.
05Two versions of a third-house node
| Reads as quietly capable | Reads as under-applied | |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu's dispositor | Strong and well placed, giving the skill a field | Weak, so the capability has nowhere to land |
| The 3rd lord | Sound, and connected to the 10th or 11th | Afflicted, or lost in a difficult house |
| Mars | In decent shape — initiative has a supply | Weak, so effort starts late and stops early |
| Time elapsed | Read after the mid-thirties, as upachaya intends | Judged early, when the house has not matured |
| What it looks like | A specialist who never marketed the specialism | Talent that stayed a hobby by default |
06Which lord actually carries a node
Everyone agrees Ketu works through a dispositor, and the schools part company over which dispositor that is. Classical Parashari practice reads the lord of the sign, while a large body of modern practice, the Krishnamurti stream in particular, ranks the lord of the nakshatra above it and reads the sign lord as secondary. A chart can therefore be given two defensible readings of the same node, and the useful question to ask any astrologer is which lord they weighted.
