02The fifth house is wider than children
The fifth covers intelligence, discrimination, creative output, mantra practice, speculation and purva punya, the store of merit a life is held to arrive with. Children are one signification among several, and in classical practice they are judged from the fifth lord, Jupiter and the navamsa together rather than from whoever occupies the house. Reducing this house to one subject is how most bad readings of it begin.

Rahu stands opposite in the eleventh, and the pair reads as one movement: the ability is already sitting in the fifth, while the unfinished business is in the eleventh's world of networks, gains and belonging to a group. That is the mechanical version of what popular astrology dresses up as destiny, and it is considerably more useful. It tells you where competence is cheap for this person and where effort will actually cost something.

06Whether the nodes aspect anything at all
The 5th, 7th and 9th pattern used on this page is the convention most working astrologers apply, but its provenance is weaker than its popularity suggests, since the classical chapter on drishti grants special aspects to three grahas and the nodes are not among them. Some lineages therefore allow the nodes only the ordinary opposition, and others allow them nothing at all on the grounds that a point with no body cannot cast a glance. The disagreement is live enough that it is worth asking which convention any reading of your chart was built on.
