01Overview
02What the eighth house actually covers
The eighth is the private compartment of a chart: money that belongs to more than one person, inheritance, insurance, research, and everything a life does not put on display. It is a dusthana, and it is also one of the three moksha houses, which is why the same house carries both the tradition's warnings and its deepest subjects. A graha whose method is cutting to the root is in unusually appropriate territory here.
03How the placement tends to show
04The one seat the tradition and the node agree on
Ketu is the moksha karaka and the eighth is a moksha house, which makes this one of the few placements where a node's own subject matter and its house point in the same direction. Rahu stands opposite in the second, so the axis reads as a life whose depth is already available and whose hunger is for what can be held, named and kept. Read that way, the placement explains a researcher's temperament far better than any warning about the eighth house does.
05Two eighth houses under one node
| Reads as an investigator | Reads as withdrawn | |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu's dispositor | Strong, and placed where the depth is used | Weak, so the interest never becomes work |
| The 8th lord | Well placed, and not harming the lagna | Afflicted, or damaging an angle |
| The lagna lord | Sound — the person carries the house | Weak, so the house carries the person |
| Benefic contact | Jupiter reaching the house or its lord | No benefic anywhere near the eighth |
| What it looks like | Expertise in something few people examine | A private life that stopped reporting in |
06When this house is actually speaking
The eighth is among the quietest houses in a chart until a period brings it forward, which is why its reputation is built almost entirely on the years when it is loud. Ketu's mahadasha is seven years, the shortest in the cycle, and the periods of the eighth lord and of the dispositor light this house from other directions. Treating a standing placement as a permanent condition is the single most common error made with this house.
