01Overview
02More departments than one house should carry
The fifth house holds intelligence, creative output, romance, speculation, children and purva punya — merit carried in from before this life. That is an unusually crowded brief, and it is why two readings of the same fifth house can sound like descriptions of different charts. Mangala in it sharpens every item on the list rather than choosing between them.
03The register this placement sets
04The strong case, stated exactly
For a Cancer ascendant the fifth house is Scorpio, so Mars sits in its own sign inside a trikona it also owns, and because it owns the tenth as well it is that chart's yogakaraka — the graha the whole chart improves through. What this configuration is not is Ruchaka yoga, which requires a kendra, and the fifth is a trine rather than an angle. Stating that limit is the point: a placement can be among the strongest in a chart without collecting every label people want to attach to strength.
05Sharp, and merely impatient
| The edge produces | The edge costs | |
|---|---|---|
| The 5th sign | Capricorn (exalted), Aries or Scorpio (own) | Cancer (debilitated) — a Pisces lagna |
| The 5th lord | Strong, in an angle or a trine | Weak, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th |
| Jupiter | Sound, and contacting the house | Afflicted — appetite without a brake on it |
| Mercury | Well placed — analysis under the speed | Weak — quickness without the working out |
| Whose ascendant | Cancer — Mars owns this trikona and the 10th | A lagna where Mars owns the 8th or the 12th |
06Which fifth house is being read
Standard Parashari practice reads children from the fifth house counted from the lagna, but a widely used convention reads the fifth counted from Jupiter instead, on the principle that a house is judged from its own significator. Those two fifth houses are usually different houses in the same chart, and they routinely give different answers. Some practitioners require both to agree before saying anything, others treat the lagna reckoning as authoritative and the karaka reckoning as confirmation, and the texts do not settle which is primary.
