01Overview
02What the second house is holding
The second house is everything a life keeps rather than earns: accumulated resources, the family you come from, food, the voice, and the face that speaks. It is a house of retention, which is why a graha whose whole method is push sits in it awkwardly at first glance. Mangala here is force applied to something that would rather sit still.
03How this placement is usually described
04What a list of house numbers cannot see
The dosha condition is stated as a set of house numbers and says nothing at all about dignity, which is where the second house quietly refutes it. A Sagittarius ascendant puts Capricorn in the second, so Mars is exalted in the flagged house; a Pisces or Libra ascendant puts Aries or Scorpio there, which makes Mangala the second lord standing in its own house, one of the strongest ordinary configurations a house lord can have. None of that changes the label, and all of it changes the reading.
05Two second houses under one label
| Holds what it takes | Spends at the speed it earns | |
|---|---|---|
| The 2nd sign | Capricorn (exalted), Aries or Scorpio (own) | Cancer (debilitated) — a Gemini lagna |
| The 2nd lord | Well placed, and not in a dusthana | Weak, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th |
| Saturn's involvement | Contacting the house — retention has a floor | No contact — nothing slows the outflow |
| The 11th house | Sound — inflow and holding are both supported | Thin — the second has little arriving to hold |
| Speech | Reads as decisive and economical | Reads as abrupt before it reads as clear |
06The house the traditions cannot agree on
Every list of mangal dosha houses contains the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, and the argument is entirely about the second. A large body of north Indian practice includes it on the grounds that the second is kutumba, the family a marriage joins; a large body of practice, including much southern usage, leaves it out and treats the five-house list as the classical one. Nobody has reconciled the two, which means a person whose only flagged placement is the second is manglik or not depending on whose method was applied.
