01Overview
02The house that meets the room first
Tanu bhava is the sheath — the body handed to you, its constitution, and the manner that arrives ahead of your opinions. It is also the origin point every other house is numbered from, so a graha standing here tints the whole reading rather than one department of living. Shukra at that origin puts the faculty of taste on the instrument itself, not on the pleasures the instrument goes looking for.
03What the sources attach to this seat
04The yoga that needs this house to be a kendra
Malavya yoga asks for Venus in its own sign or its exaltation while standing in a kendra counted from the lagna, and the first house is the nearest kendra there is. A Taurus or Libra ascendant with Shukra in the first, or a Pisces ascendant with Shukra exalted there, holds one of the five pancha mahapurusha yogas by definition. Every other ascendant gets the same house number with a different chart underneath it.
05The same seat under two conditions
| ♀︎Reads as grace | Reads as drift | |
|---|---|---|
| The lagna sign | Pisces (exalted), Taurus or Libra (own) | Virgo (debilitated) — a Virgo ascendant |
| The lagna lord | Sound, and not hidden in a dusthana | Weak, or tucked into the 6th, 8th or 12th |
| Distance from the Sun | Far enough out to be clear of combustion | Close in and burnt by the Sun |
| What contacts the lagna | Mercury or Jupiter in contact | Heavy contact only, or nothing at all |
| In the navamsa | Venus keeps its dignity in the D9 | Venus loses ground in the D9 |
06Whether Venus is in this house at all
Two standard chart styles answer that differently. The rasi chart puts a graha in the house matching its sign, so anything in the ascendant's sign counts as first-house; the bhava chalit chart uses degree-based cusps, and a Venus sitting a few degrees behind the ascendant point lands in the twelfth instead. Both are working methods with long usage, they disagree routinely about grahas near a cusp, and a reading that never says which one it used has quietly picked for you.
